Pet Illness & Grief
Through pet loss and grief therapy, we’ll honor your unique relationship with your beloved companion, allowing you to find comfort and meaning in the midst of your heartache.
Do you ever have these feelings...
and wonder what is going on?
- There’s a special kind of exhaustion that comes with caring for a sick animal and there’s a special kind of grief when our animal family members die.
- The grief can be overwhelming, and it can feel isolating – people sometimes worry about admitting their grief for animals, they may feel shame or fear judgment from others. These worries are normal and so is your grief.
- There’s a special feature of grief when we humans are the ones to decide it’s time to call the euthanasia doctor.
Something You Can Do:
Giving yourself the time you need.
Having a pet in your life is a lot like parenting, for many people, it IS parenting. Whether you see yourself as a parent, owner, or housemate, living with animals brings both joy and challenges.
The everyday joys like making connections through eye contact, seeing them learn a new skill or adaptation, and snuggle time. Or the common challenges like when they don’t behave well or waking up in the middle of many nights to tend to their needs.
But when our furry, feathery, scaly, or finned or otherwise family member gets sick we experience a deeper level of emotions. If our pet has a chronic illness that is life-limiting, we change from a loving companion to a primary caregiver. Professionally speaking, this is when feelings of grief and loss often begin.
